what should used the serial number

What should be used for the serial number?

I downloaded the version from the website, but I don't have a serial number. Was it emailed to me, and I just missed it, or what?

1) Did you download the ISO from Microsoft's website? 2) Did you register on Microsoft's website for the Beta? 3) Did you receive an email from Microsoft giving you the download link? 4) Did you receive an email from Microsoft giving you the CD key?
Ask yourself the above questions.
Is your answer "Yes" to at least 2 of them? Then you more than probably deleted the email which gave the CD key, or your Spam filter put it in your Junk Mail folder (whatever it is named) or deleted it for good.
In which case you will have to apply for a CD key from Microsoft again.
This
time, save all emails from Microsoft, and check your Junk mail folders.
Or, order the CD, and wait for it to be shipped to you. It will contain a CD key at that time.

You probably downloaded from one of the dozen wrong links in a dozen news sites.
The correct way to download is from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/preview.mspx from which you get the key and also email which has the serial
